As someone who's been in band for nearly 15 years. No, none of these instruments are remotely any good nor good to even start on. These are pretty much just toys. If you want to buy it to get your kid to shut up about it because you'll know they'll lose interest in a week. This is perfect. Otherwise prepare to spend a couple of hundred dollars.

What would you recommend that isn't exactly in the hundreds maybe 100, perhaps something used off ebay

I would speak to the violin instructor. Instruments aren't something you want to cheap out on. There are no slick deals for orchestra instruments

Beware of VSOs. Violin shaped objects. Same goes for guitars. Quickest way to kill a beginner's enthusiasm.

Not everyone has 100s of dollars to spend on a first instrument. I had something similar growing up and learned a lot on it. I would play it day and night.
