Gamers opinions please: looking for a 1st gaming system for 5, 7, 9 yr old kiddos. Something with a few physical games so they move around a bit while playing.

Narrowed it down to a Wii or Wii U ... which should I get?

Wii is probably your best bet for kids that young. A lot of movement based games (although a ton aren't GREAT). However, the Wii Sports games, Just Dance games, and a few others are probably worth the money compared to a Wii U.

Unless you're also looking to do some gaming, then I would suggest going with the Wii U.

Just did a quick google of wii vs wii u ( probably should've done that before asking) and unless I'm crazy it looks like wii u can play every wii game, and can use any wii accessory. Is that right? If true, is there any reason why I wouldn't want the 'u'?

Also, and maybe this is a delicate question... I want to be able to play backed-up games. Little kids, sticky fingers, cough... I assume getting a refurb'd unit from Nintendo they would include the latest firmware which would make it impossible to do this, is that true?

Thanks gamers.

Only reason I was suggesting the Wii is if you wanted to get out of it really cheap.

You could pick up a backwards compatible Wii (plays Gamecube games) for around $15-$20 these days.

If you don't mind spending the money, then yes, a Wii U is definitely the way to go with it.

And if you really wanted to, you could softmod the Wii emulator on the Wii U to make it play all the old school games/backups as well. It's REALLY simple to do with the original Wii, only a little bit harder to do with the Wii U.

Basically just comes down to if you want to spend the money or not.

The wii-u can play Wii games it's backwards compatible, buy the wii-u. the only problem is that it has only 32gb storage space so you might have to buy more space if your planning on downloading games from the shop.

Modded Wii for sure. Likely you can find them dirt cheap on Craigslist. Also, depending on what software they loaded (I used to use WiiFlow) you can go rent Just Dance 2018, pop it into the disc drive, go to settings, and save it to the hard drive. ...or so I've heard.

I heard the community efforts to play downloaded games on the Wii U are pretty successful - If price were not a huge factor would you still go for the Wii over the U?

If price was not a factor WiiU all the way. You can lookup how to mod at WiiU dot guide. It's walks you through the process step by step.

Aside from all the other comments you've received, those are some young kids and the Wii u requires the touch screen controller it comes with. If that breaks, it'll cost you another $150-$200, and reports claim that it breaks A LOT! Wii is the smarter option for kids that age.

Wii all the way. Just sold my WiiU, because you can still get some money for it. Got back into hacking my original Wii and it is so easy!! So many awesome features available. You can do it to Wii U too, but if you screw up and brick it, out a little more money.
