How does this compare to the current generation iPad 9.7 and iPad Pro 10.5?

Current IPad is in a different league: thicker, heavier and no apple pencil support.

As for the 10.5 inch ipad pro, it has larger screen with better refresh rate, A10X versus A9X chip (30% faster) and slightly heavier (40 grams I believe)

Real world performance with the new iPad 9.7 is similar. Forget about thicker and heavier....they're few grams or mm apart. You're not going to be able to notice the difference. The real difference are the lack of True Tone (?) display in the regular iPad, lack of quad speakers and iPencil.
Can't say about performance of the new Pro vs this because I haven't done my own research.

Amazon has these (last gen pro 128GB) certified refurbished for $425 about a week or two ago. $440 now as I wrote this. Not all sellers are reliable though but I ordered 2 and didn't see any imperfection and ran just fine. I ended up returning them though because the new iPad sale were just a lot cheaper and I didn't really need the pencil usage from the Pro Big Grin

So you would just get the new ipad vs the last gen pro? Is the last gen pro thinner than the current gen regular ipad? Or is the only difference the apple pencil?

Updated my post with a bit more info. If you're not going to utilize the add-ons of the iPad Pro (pencil and the smart keyboard), I really don't see the need of spending $100 (or more if you get regular iPad 128GB for sale ~$350) on it. The last gen Pro is a bit thinner than the new iPad but you're talking 1.5mm difference. Weight is 1 oz difference. That's not going to make any real world difference laugh out loud

Agreed, and during BF you can probably find the new iPad at around that $350 price. Hard to justify spending that extra $100 - $150. For $25 - $50, maybe, but that is too much of a gap for most (unless you really need the pencil capability).

They also have a "mid 2017" pro, 64gb, with a 12.9'' screen for $729 ($70 off MSRP +no taxes). This seems to be the current version as it lists the A10X 64-Bit SoC + M10 Coprocessor. (https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/pr...o_mid.html)

•Any reason the hardware would be different being listed as "Mid 2017"?
•Should I hold out for a better deal (don't really see anything coming up with this exact spec)?

few things to consider
Pro 9.7 has true tone which iPad doesn't
Front/rear facing camera are better in iPad Pro 9.7 which iPad doesn't
A9x chip Vs A9 (2017)
thinner, lighter (which regular folks will barely notice)
