Looking at this for my grandson, seems like a lot of bang for your buck. 8th gen i5s look faster than 7th gen i7s according to cpubenchmark.

Give at least a laptop with 1080p resolution to your grandson. This IS NOT a lot of bang for the buck. It's not even meh

You can give this one to him:

Its a lot of performance for the buck. Not everyone cares about 1080p on a screen that is under 32 inches. You are correct that this is pretty right priced though for what we are seeing.

for reference check out the old FP 7th gen i5 that is basically this without a touch screen and 4gb less ram. 380 (or wad it 360 i forget) for that or this with the touch 8th gen i5 and 4 extra gb of ram. all those are worth probably exactly the bump in price but most just want the 8th gen for that 7th gen hq performance.

Correct. The response you got though is also correct that the price is basically spot on for what you are getting. If there are any complaints of slowness a ssd is the next step but these units require the entire bottom plate removed and sometimes worse the motherboard just for a simple memory add or hdd/ssd swap.

If you are not spending more than the price here this is a good deal

I would still recommend to go for 1920 x 1080 IPS Touch screen. You wont see drastic difference in the perfoamance tbh unless you are running VMWare or some other heavy software.

And if someones budget on a gift is 450 for someone going to college/high school?

Your personal preference does not work for everyone. They specifically are looking to gift performance of a 8th gen part which limits choices to the 6th and 7th gen hq parts or 8th gen. The hq parts will drain battery quicker and so will a 1080p screen.

Only other suggestions would be the microcenter deals.

Well, then I will recommend to wait a bit more. $450 is more than enough to snag a good deal. I am not asking you to spend thousands but just recommending you so that you dont have to spend again in a year or so. Moreover, IdeaPad 3xx seires is not that good from the quality perspective as well. I would recommend you see some youtube videos regarding it too.
I don't know why they need 8th gen. The world didnt stand still when 8th gen were not around Smilie Even MBP currently has 7th gen of CPUs.
But again, I am not forbidding you. You can buy and keep an eye on a better deal and then return it to Costco within 90 days period. WaveWaveWave

Lol the world did not stand still with pentium ii as well. If I was giving a tool to my kid I would be looking for something we wont cry over if it gets broken/stolen but also can get the job done. If they decide to take up auto cad in a year or two they wont look for a more powerful laptop. The 1080 screen wont help that. They would be connecting to a nice large monitor vs working on a tiny screen heavily.

No one will upgrade in 1-2 years because the resolution is too low. They will if they get into something that will benefit from a 50% faster processor. Also in 1 to 2 years if they do upgrade people will not be wanting 4 to 5 year old processors in their used laptop. They may consider the first quad-core gen processor. If they know what they are doing they may upgrade the screen themselves etc.

Personally I would go to 600 and just grab the acer if I had to choose right now but that's for me. Gift for a school kid? They are not getting the acer unless its a shared gift.

recommendation to wait is silly. its always better to wait but you can wait until you die and still not buy the 'best'. at some point everyone needs to pull the trigger and christmas is coming. like you said 90 day return policy is insane on a laptop. something comes up get that return this. otherwise merry x-mas. no one wants a empty spot under the tree because of waiting. The disappointment is not worth it imo.
