Is there an app for this instead of a hardware radio?

Don't know much about this stuff but want to get into it.

You mean like an app on the phone?

This kind of off the grid communication will require specific hardware (not built into phones). If you use the phone, it'll just go through cellular and wifi networks, which defeats the purpose of staying off the grid.

Also, specific comm devices are easier to manage, charge, isolate, than a phone.

Uh, these don't have an encryption chip on them. Encryption chips are very expensive. So a digital scanner on the same band can pick up your transmissions. Not sure if that was what you are trying to say. These are nice radios for the price though.
