Pretty solid deal. The only time I saw at a better price was a few month ago from Costco. Best detector you can get for that price level, if you want to spend another $150 you can step up up the uniden r3 which would give you everything this one has in addition to better BSM filtering (this one still does good job at it) and unlimited gps lockout versus the 100 you get with this one.

Either option is great

Correction: the R3 doesn't offer unlimited lockouts it offers 200

I think I'll wait a little for the R3 as well. But still best case scenario it'll come down $50 and there'll still be a $100 difference between the two

I'm a new person in the market, recently bit by the obvious. Where can I read up more on like a buyers guide?

Doubt r3 will go below $400 as it's already 10% of msrp

I trust Vortex Radar: https://www.vortexradar.com/best-...detectors/

Also RD Forum for more: https://www.rdforum.org/index.php

Edit: start using Waze now and look for a detector soon. If you can afford it and your state allows them, the next step would be laser jammers, but most people don't think spending $1500+ on them is worth it (plus they are illegal in some states).

I wouldn't hold out for a discount on the R3. You can't even get them right now due to insane demand and limited production. Not only that, Uniden is adamant about sticking to MAP with the R3 to avoid what happened with the LRD950. If you want a good deal on a Uniden, the DFR7 at $249 is the way to go.

GPS will provide following functionality:

- Mute static false alerts (e.g. speed signs)
- Low speed muting (e.g. driving slowly around shopping mall parking lot with automatic doors around -> no alerts)
- Red light/speed camera and known speed trap alerts
- Automatic configuration change based on speed (highway vs city mode)
- Custom location alerts (if you have a need for this)

I believe only Ka band is used in California. Because of this, GPS (which this detector has) is less useful (except for red light camera database).

Personally, I would pay $50, get Uniden R1 (basically R3 without GPS) and switch off everything except Ka band. You'll get top of the line range for not much more. The difference in price is maybe even less than $50 as you might buy R1 without sales tax.

Also, be aware radar detector will not save you in all cases. You should pay attention and use multiple countermeasures.

Some cases where detector will not save you:
- laser: it's usually too late once detector notifies you of a laser hit. You need jammers to protect from laser. Waze is useful as laser can be used only while stationary thus increasing probability cop will be reported on waze
- instant-on radar: nothing can help you with this if you're alone on a road so cop doesn't use instant-on radar on someone ahead of you. Pay attention to possible police cars.
- visual speed estimation/airplanes (VASCAR)/pacing: don't speed with police behind or in front of you, use Waze.
