I recently heard that Quicken now requires a subscription to run the program. I've been a long time Quicken user, but will be looking for an alternative if a subscription is required.

Quicken was never without problems and now it's a yearly subscription. You pay their bloated prices and do not even own the program you rent it. I will no longer buy this and have used it for years.

If you've used the past few versions, then you probably know that Quicken is only good for about 3 years with online banking connections. The new Quicken company is making it explicitly SaaS (Software as a Service).

Quicken has been a 3 year subscription based if you utilize the online downloads and connections to your financial accounts. Starting with Quicken 2018, they are now selling it as a 2 year subscription for the online features.

However, according to their website, if you don't renew after 2 years, you can still use the software and access your data. They just disable the online features. Essentially they are now forcing you to upgrade after 2 years instead of 3 years before the online features are disabled.

any alternatives that can do online auto downloads from many banks as Quicken does?
any other with "Web Connect" feature?
The reason that are not many Fin institutions provide Direct Connect, while some do, but charges monthly fee for it!!! As result even 2 years for $60 costs less

Quicken users, almost by definition, are going to be people who watch their money carefully. The brilliant execs at Quicken who came up with the idea to try to get people like that to sign up for an auto-renewing subscription for a product that doesn't really seem to change much from year-to-year anyhow don't really know their customers.

I'll sit back and watch for a couple years and see how things play out.

False. Some people like me need quicken. But if I didn't I would probably use mint.

Mint is not even in the same league as Quicken. Love or hate Quicken, it does have a nice set of features that I use. I've looked at every alternative out there and found NOTHING offers me what Quicken does in one package. That said, if you need simple back account information and budgeting the Mint may be for you.

I guess I made a clear comment above "as a subscription" it is waste... I have been using it since 1998 as desktop only version. Its reasonable to expire it(with your own self management options left open) for every 3 years. But now you gotta pay premium price for every year if not, they would lock your ALL historical transactions, which is harsh.

Um, you sure about the last part (bolded) in your post? Here's what Quicken shows in FAQ [quicken.com]on their website.
Quote :
What happens to my data if my subscription is cancelled or expires?
The Quicken Data Access Guarantee means that whether you renew your subscription or not, you'll always have full access to and ownership of your data. You can view, edit, export, and manually enter transactions and accounts for Deluxe and higher versions, even after your subscription ends*. Access to online services, such as transaction download, quotes, and mobile sync, along with access to Quicken Support, will end if your subscription does. We'll continue to let you know about product changes and enhancements within the Quicken product.
Guess you are happy now?

Any codes for the home/business edition? Need that flavor for rental properties.
