was just about to post this...scored a deal on the Nest and it's cheaper than buying from Costco/Newegg. too bad Ecobee no longer provides extra discount that other companies do, otherwise i wouldve gotten the Ecobee instead of Nest.

I am sure you have seen it since it is on front page now but at Costco ecobee 3 with 3 sensors is kn sale for 170 which is great deal plus what ever your state rebates if any. If you have a costco near you it has been stated that membership is fully refundable so you can get it refunded the same day you make the purchase thanks!

You should mention the Big Brother making you sweat aspect of this if you enroll in their BS program:

"When you enroll, you allow Con Edison to make brief, limited adjustments to your central air-conditioner setting during the summer to reduce demand on our electric grid."

Basically $75 off unless you are crazy enough to want to allow the Electric company to make you sweat so they can reduce their costs in the summer lol.

Ok added, but I went through checkout and there was no account verification that you need to be a ConEd customer, just an address with ConEd service.

Is there any real reason not to go for the cheaper Nest Thermostat E instead of the regular 3rd gen Nest, other than the inferior display and plastic body?

can you get the rebate even if you purchased your own smart (nest) thermostat independently of this sale?

that's the caveat. Although my thermostat can control A/C as well, I normally turn on the A/C in individual rooms so it doesn't affect me at all. however, "You are always in control and can override the settings at any time."

i think Nest E doesn't have the feature to turn on the display automatically when motion is detected. https://nest.com/thermostats/compare/

You may be able to override, but that is besides the point. They can turn it off for extended periods of time and repeatedly if they wish to all because THEY want to. Anyone who thinks it is a good idea to let the Electric company run your life and control the temperature in your home to save a handful of dollars deserves the excess sweat and grief they are likely to get from Con Ed lol. They are doing this for their benefit NOT yours.

when I get mine, I can perhaps post some updates to what ConEd actually does to it.

it sounds a bit over exaggerated; to all honesty I don't like giving control to others, but ConEd may control my thermostat, they definitely don't control my "life" as you described. here's from the ConEd website, if it makes any difference:

Quote :
A maximum of up to 10 events each summer, unless there is a power emergency.

Each event will last no longer than four hours and will take place sometime between 11:30 a.m. and 11 p.m. on weekdays.

You will always have control of your thermostat and can change the settings at any time
the most I may have to do is run an automated script to change the temp back whenever it gets changed by ConEd, other than that I don't really see any seriousness.

Unless there is a power emergency which they define lol....Control your life...maybe not...but they can make you sweat a lot if they so choose to or make you work to stop them from doing so. To each his own, but there is no way I would let them do that even if they gave me a $200 thermostat for free.
