YMMV: Please note they shipped me the wrong router when I ordered at the higher price AC1750 not AC2600.

Netgear has been lagging with security upgrades lately.
Not fixing known issues as well, there is a very long thread on their forums, granted different product and different issue, but their support has been awful.

I'm apologizing in advance, I'm a big dumb dumb. I need a router and a modem, can I find a dual router and modem or will I need to buy two separate items?

Oh wasn't aware, still thinking of sticking with this purchase since I had some amazon gift cards laying around also buying now is cheaper and will prevent missing out on a sold out deal.

There are combined modems and routers. I have never used the combos.

Most advice is to buy separate. I haven't kept up with combo modem/routers but they are usually not as good and tend to have connection issues. Also if it fails you are out of service where as if a router goes down then you just need to replace that specifically.

No need, the FCC is going to handle that for Alexa by throttling the speed. Majority will just need to pay extra for "speed boosts".

X6 is based off broadcom platform which has worse cpu performance and open source support compared to x4s's ipq806x platform (they are actually from the same family as the snapdragon 8XX SOC for high end mobile phones).

Generally speaking I always avoid broadcom platform because their wifi stack (except from the really old 802.11g era) offload a lot of things to their firmware blob running on their SOC which opens up to lots of practically unpatchable security holes that will for sure surface in the future.

The benefit of other major networking SOC platforms other than broadcom, like qualcomm ipq806x, marvell 88F series, mediatek 760X is that all the critical data path lives on the linux kernel space that is handled by driver. At least lede and ddwrt had a really good track record patching supported platforms which no consumer grade router vendor can match.

As an added benefit, you also sometimes get feature update that had no dependency on hardware. As an example, the legendary ath9k which is fully open source from end to end, was able to add support for 802.11s mesh networking.
