I need one of these but is this really worth 4x the price over this?

Other than the nice features (auto rotating display, smart backlight, waterproof, auto sleep\wake), people praise and highly rate it for the accuracy and longevity. It's constantly brought up in BIFL (buy it for life) internet threads.
According to the internet, it's a notch above the rest and that's why I decided to finally pull the trigger. I've had way too many cheap thermometers getting destroyed throughout the years. Hopefully, this one will last.

I would say no. I have a Thermapen and love it. But it's way overpriced. It's biggest advantage over the above is speed. If you can live wit waiting 2 seconds longer get the Thermoworks.

I have 2-3 of these and they are excellent.

If you have to ask, probably not. It's a professional tool. But I have one of the cheapies, and let me tell you they are quite frustrating to use if you demand performance.

It totally sucks standing over a hot pan splattering oil all over yourself while waiting for your pen's temperature to stabilize. And if the temp isn't right, get ready to do it all over again in a little while. It takes 10 seconds for the cheap models; don't believe them when they say 5 seconds or under. And I have frequently overcooked or undercooked meat because of inaccurate or slow readings.

I just ordered the Super-Fast® Pocket Thermometer (RT600C) for $16 (instead of $24) plus shipping. Great reviews on site and still offers very similar benefits to the top end model.

I have a Thermopop but I think I'll upgrade. This is probably a weird thing to bring up, but one thing I like about the Mk4 is that it uses a standard AAA battery. I'm not the biggest fan of stockpiling watch batteries. It's enough of an annoyance for me that I think the upgrade is worth it.

I don't know how the one you linked to really is, but I've bought several in the $15-$25 range on Amazon, and all of them frustrated me while using and then broke. The Thermapen is awfully expensive, but if I lost mine, I'd buy it again. It's faster, more consistent*, and feels very, very durable. I'm also glad I got the silicon case with the magnets: I keep it stuck to the side of the refrigerator.

*There's more variation I believe within a piece of meat and between similar pieces than I'd expected. And temperature still jumps up unexpectedly. But I no longer blame the thermometer; I think the Thermapen is accurate and fast, but it didn't solve all my problems.

This looks good at only $10 but is a BF special. Regularly $15.

I'm too bargain conscious to spend $80 for a thermometer. I have one for less than $10 at target that works fine for my needs.

Personally, yes, but it all depends on your usage. My wife works with melted sugar, where you need to have your temperature readings very fast. 10 seconds vs. 2 seconds can make all the difference in a batch sometimes.

I also regularly grill food for about 25 people at a time (we have some great work lunches several times a year!), and there is always a mix of ribeye, chicken, and porkchops on the grills. The Thermapen is awesome for that because I can get a reading in 2 - 3 seconds on anything I want to check instead of waiting 10 seconds for the chicken, then another 10 for the pork, etc.

It all comes down to how quick you need your reading. For just grilling at home, it's a bit overkill, even if it's nice. I had cheaper thermometers I used in the past (one that comes to mind is a grilling fork where the prongs were the thermometer. Looked too cool to pass up years ago at Target, but the thermometer SUUUUUCKED. Waited 10 - 15 seconds for a reading), and now that I've used a Thermapen, it's hard to go back.
