Wow, that's a great price on a brand new one, especially for dual bevel! And these blades aren't cheap either. You'll still likely want a stand, but you can get one with the money you saved on the saw!

Yeah I'm not up to date on all the latest mitre saw technology... But this strikes me as an excellent deal

How does this compare with the front page 779 for $350?

This is not dual beveled or sliding, the other is.

Would this work well to cut 2x4s to length or should I get a circular saw for that? Having said that, I would not be using this very often once I get my framing done in the basement I believe. Overkill?

yes, get a cordless circular it's way easier. A small framing square and circular saw is all you'll need for 2X4 framing.

This is in fact a dual bevel saw. It also has the highly regarded XPS cut positioning system which the DW779 does not have. You're right, no slide, but that can be a benefit or a detractor depending on what you're using it for. This saw is certainly lighter and more compact than the DW779 but it does not have the capacity to cut as wide boards. Both are awesome saws.

If you're just using it for framing, might be overkill. With that said, I picked up a 10" ryobi sliding miter saw a while ago from a deal and I use it all the time for different projects. Currently building a crib and using it heavily. It has a lot of utility and I love mine. Definitely agree with needing a stand though (or building one yourself). This is a great deal for a 12" saw.
