I wonder if this will allow third party Z-wave sensors and still notify ADT. I talked to Ring recently about their upcoming security system and they said that only their branded z-wave sensors will notify central monitoring, not third-party ones. I already have a lot of money invested in other sensors, don't want to have to buy special ADT sensors just for this to be able to contact monitoring if I go that route.

EDIT: Looks like if you want ADT monitoring that it will only work with ADT branded sensors, as per some marketing material verbiage. Just a way for them to cash in more. Too bad I can't use cheaper sensors.

Yes you can use the SmartThings app for any device that would otherwise work with Smartthings (integrated) hub. No you cannot use a 3rd party door sensor for example and have it work with ADT monitoring. Probably a good plug and play security option. There is also a new Honeywell security kit on indegogo for those looking for another easy home security option.
