Ancestry.com is a very good resource for those interested in researching family history and genealogy. In addition to wide public record access (and some private collections), they also allow users to view others' family trees and research which can be invaluable when getting started or if your own family knowledge is spotty.

Personally, I find Ancestry's monthly memberships (starting at $20/mo) to be prohibitively expensive. However, they periodically run membership promotions of 20%, usually aligned with US holidays.

For Thanksgiving this year, Ancestry is running a 50% promo off of gift memberships, which you can 'gift' to yourself. The prices per membership level are:

-U.S. Discovery: $49 (6-mo), $94 (1-yr)
-World Explorer: $74 (6-mo), $149 (1-yr)

Note: When I spoke to an agent earlier this week, they also included a price for the All Access membership level which is not included on the gift membership link. Perhaps this is a sign that a proper 50% non-gift membership is coming soon. But in my experience, 'All Access' provides little if any benefit over 'World Explorer':
-All Access: $99 (6-mo), $189 (1-yr)

Why would anyone need a subscription? Can't they just do one report and be done with their service?

Are you thinking of an Ancestry dna test? Those are on sale too, but this deal is for membership to the family tree info, where you can go in and see details (without a subscription it will show you matches to people on your family tree, but blank out most of the details).

The DNA test works this way (apart from connecting you to other users). But the membership is more about researching and building detailed family trees, informed by lots of OCR'd public and private documents going back hundreds of years. It also gives you access to other users' public family trees which can be extremely useful.

My advice is to sign up once for a few months and do most of the heavy-lifting. Then drop back in maybe a year or two later and add the new details that have been found in the meantime.

Does this stack on existing subscription?
