great NAS. i have the 8 bay version of this and it's a beast

just a FYI though. if you just need something for file serving (ie just network storage) this is overkill by a long shot. if you want to know what this does, check out the PDF manual on QNAP's site. even an experienced user may only use half of what this thing is capable of

the QNAP TS-431P for $204 was a great deal. i posted that a couple of days ago but i think it's over now.

with regards to plex - i know everyone wants to run plex on their NAS. i highly recommend buying a $100 HP Elite refurb desktop and running it on that. you'll get an i5 that can handle 2-3 simultaneous 1080 transcode streams and it will allow you to get the less expensive NAS boxes. the manufacturers gouge you when you start getting the higher spec models, so it makes more financial sense to offload all of the heavy hitting to a desktop. this thing only has a Intel Celeron N3150 1.6 GHz Quad-Core processor. for reference, that's what i have in my chromebook and is far from ideal for what i would want to use to attempt any 1080p transcoding.

I'm new to the NAS market and bought 2 of the BB $160 slickdeal 8TB WD drives. Would this be a good choice to start with? Perhaps go back and order another 2 of the drives... 4x8TB + NAS for ~$1000+tax

Haha keep dreaming. Synology watches their prices like a hawk.

Yes drive "shucking" is , at this point, a ritual thoroughly enjoyed by many Slickdealers.
