Been spending the last 2 days looking at video cards (as a gaming noob). The brand seems to be recognized as the best and the price is less than most of their other lower-tier models. Retail looks to be $599.

I was wondering the same thing....consensus seems to be that the ftw2 is better as there are more power phases but that it nearly doesn't matter.

Why the thumbs down? If you voted this down, please explain why.

I need a card, can't wait for the mass drop deals and I'm considering this one. This is not the cheapest GTX 1080, but it is one of the better quality ones, and so this is a good deal, right? Maybe not the slickest of deals, but a solid buy if you need a card now. Opinions? Wave

Probably because Newegg had a sale not to long ago on EVGA 1080ti FTW3 for $699 + $100 gift card.

Noob question. My son is going to build a gaming computer in summer. Any thoughts if we can see lower prices by then?

Historically, not really due to GPU crypto-mining.. I bought my 1080 FTW in July of last year for 680 when it came out, which I believe was the msrp and it's 580 right now in Newegg, a full year and 4 months after.

I think the difference between the ftw and sc2 is that the more power phases come into play with over clocking. .I boggy 1080 sc2 and another guy had an water cooled 1080 that had more power phases and he could get more power added to the card for over clock (we are both mining trying to see the differences)
so if you are not to worried with over clocking...either will do
