Your motherboard needs to support the correct PCI level to really utilize this board. If you don't have SATA 3 already, you likely won't get anything out of this card.

I have a Dell t3500 workstation with PCIe 2.0 but sata ii so this will be good for an SSD for me. But I don't think I can use it as a boot drive from everything I've read so far

It's bootable, at least it was in my experience, with a P45 chipset motherboard and a Samung EVO 850. Dell does odd things though.
