I missed out on the Fry's $90 deal but works out almost the same for me since I don't have to pay tax for Newegg, plus can order up to 5 drives (I needed 2 drives).

I have 4 of these in my Synology DS1815 for almost 2 years for Plex, transcoding, backups, etc..almost constant workload without any issues.

I never met this brand before. It's better than Toshiba HDD?

HGST has been one of the most reliable manufacturers of HDDs. That being said, reviews on newegg about this model make me nervous.

I found out about them via backup service BackBlaze. They release reports on the drives they use for their service and storage. The HGST 4TB have consistently been one of their faves.

I have 6 running now and ordered another one during the last sale a few days ago on Fry's. Have had 0 issues so far. They are a little louder due to spinning at 7200, but they've been great for me.

Darn, apparently these ones are fairly noisy.

I got 3 of these from the frys deal and installed one for now on my ts251, and the noise does bother me. It will be worse if I put in one more drive. Still haven't decided whether to keep them or send back. If I do I will try wd red.

What about HGST/WD 8TB drives? Are they just as reliable as this 4TB?

Here I go again trying to figure out what to buy for my sons Xmas want list... He has a custom built gaming pc and wants more memory. He currently has 1TB and says he needs at least 5TB for his games. My budget is $500 for all his gifts total but this so far has been his only want except for a steam gift card 😁 Any help is appreciated with how to go about this.

If you're not worried about losing any data then I would buy the 8TB HGST deal. If you are concerned about losing data, I would buy two of these and run them in a raid 1. I would also buy a SSD for the operating system to live on.

He doesn't want to lose data, thanks for the help, seems these run a little loud though. How large a SSD would be required? Is there no way to transfer his HDD data to just run one large HDD like you mentioned?

Do a Google search: 8TB HGST BackBlaze. They have the most info on hard drives as they do an independent study on a lot of major brands. I can honestly say I have 3 4TB drives for 5 years now. No issues this far. Had to rebuild my raid 5 because someone accidently ejected a hot swap drive during operation. Other than that it has been Rock solid.
