How much better is this compared to the Synology DS216J? I'm really just looking for time machine backup, file storage, and some minimal IP video camera storage. From what I've been reading Plex transcoding actually needs something a little beefier than this.

Thanks!

This is a nice NAS. I researched NAS units all weekend and decided on this, as I thought it represented a better value than other budget NAS units by Asustor and Thecus and Buffalo that were also on sale. You can get cheaper, but you can't get better for the money from what I read. It's not just about the performance either, it's about the support that QNAP has, the OS, and the experience -- from what I read. Most budget NAS units will max out the 1GB/s network link with todays tech - so performance isn't the key driver in a budget NAS -- it's the interface, the extras, the support. QNAP and Synology are supposedly the best in that realm. Synology might be regarded as the best, but they rarely go on sale and cost more.

Even at $190 this NAS is rated 3rd place at Smallnetbuilder on the NAS charts.

At $150, I suspect that value proposition improves.

It did just come off sale at the same price a day ago.

Looks like the same Item #.

Edit - actually it was a pricing mistake by Newegg and they corrected it to $187.

This is the entry level QNAP. The price can certainly go lower than that. I would suggest to go for at least x51 models that you can upgrade the memory. I upgraded from a Patriot NAS to 231 and then to 251+. I am keeping the 231 as a mirror backup only.

it may go lower if the TS-231P2 will end up replacing the TS-231P. if they plan to sell both and keep the P 1st gen to meet the lower price point, i don't think it will any lower than $130-$140.

the price drop earlier this week was a pricing error on Newegg's end. for those who go in on it, props to them

you won't get any plex action on these low end budget NAS boxes

and i would get the TS-231P over the DS216J any day.

I spent hours and saw this particular unit was rated very highly everywhere. Not only this unit but QNAP in general Not only by professional reviews, but by owners.

Your one line rebuttal with no links, or clear case for authority means jack squat. You want to counter the value or quality of this unit fine. Where's the info?

What are the reasons that make you say that? I'm new to NASes so I'm trying to learn what I can. Thanks!
