If you missed the Black Friday deal on the 4TB WD Easystore from Best Buy, Amazon has the WD Elements 4TB drive for $87.99. Plus, if you're a Prime member and use your Amazon card, get another 5% off. (WDBWLG0040HBK-NESN)

The portable 4TB Element drive is $99.99. It isn't as cheap as the Best Buy deal, but if you prefer a portable drive, here's the link:

This drive is better for backups than the passport. The passport drive encrypts the data and there is no way to disable, which means when the enclosure dies like it will, you immediately lose the data. There is no way to recover it since its hardware based encryption. With this drive, you can remove the drive from the enclosure and connect it to the PC via either SATA or a dock and your information is available. Most of the portables remove the SATA connector for the proprietary USB, which removes the ability to connect the drive once the enclosure dies.

this crossed my mind but the 8TB for $150 is better per gb...
but they'll both eventaully drop in price... and 4tb is more than i need anyway...

so it seems like this might be the better option, as long run i'd lose less money (potentially the full value lol)

how cheap can i get a 1 TB?

I think this is a good deal for a 4TB. Much better per TB than 1s & 2s. I got a similar "WD easystore" 4TB for $89.99 last night from BB. At the time, a 1TB portable was $50 (yes, portables are different, but that's what I was shopping for).

But you'll also have more drives to deal with later. And price per GB has flattened out according to backblaze. The breakeven is 1.55c per GB in the time you need another 4TB. We're at 2.2c now.
