So I have installed a hard drive before, but I want to cut out some steps. I don't need to know anything about drive sizes, etc.

I have a 2TB hard drive backing up my PS4 right now. Can I swap that hard drive out and into the PS4 once the back up is complete? Or do I need a second drive (which of course I have because it was black friday) and to install that system software onto from a dumb usb drive?

Backing up and restoring will just take forever, and I don't want my wife to know.

Honestly, it'd be too easy to do the way I am asking, but maybe someone else has already tried this and knows the answer. Sorry, google doesn't understand my searches anymore.

So, first question, what are you trying to accomplish? Second, of all the current dreams, the 8tb western digital external storage drive for $150 is your best bet. Just plug it into the usb port and you're good you go

Couple points.

1. There's a maximum thickness for the PS4 hard drive slot. Your 2.5" drive probably fits it.....but it might not.

2. You can back up your game saves to USB or to the cloud if you have PS plus.

I do not think you can do what you are asking. The PS4 will treat external HD different than an internal one. Once you swap the internal HD you need to use a USB stick to reinstall the PS4 UPDATE.BAT files.

The smart thing to do is just reinstall your apps IMO or just stay as is.

Everything Krazen said. Just back up your save games and reinstall everything else. And the max thickness is 7mm, the 9mm drives won't fit in the cage without some modification.

And yes, PS4 doesn't support USB drives for games like the Xbox 1 does. A little sad, but cuts down on clutter behind your console I guess. I have no idea if PS4 Pro is different.
