Is there any advantage in using the smaller bits over drill bits?

I've used the larger spade bits, and they come in handy and work a lot better than drill bits, especially since large drill bits aren't very common, but I don't really see a point in the smaller spade bits since small bits are extremely common and do the job well.

I picked up a set In store, mine was 6 pieces + 2 free pieces so 8 pieces total for the same price.

I find using spade bits like these work well for situations where the material you're drilling through may not clear out the hole easily - thicker, soft materials. You could just back out your normal drill heads a few times mid-job to solve this, but who wants to do that. Just drill right through with these.
