I bought one and I regret it. Waiting for my replacement to come because the A/V out was malfunctioned. The HDMI out causes the system to lag and render both video and audio more slowly than normal. This causes a super strange and unenjoyable experience. You can't even usually return these to NewEgg. You have to go through the manufacturer and pay for shipping.

The Retrons have mostly been solid. When was this considered trash?

retron5 is amazing. I would think this would be ok for $15

Youre better off biting the bullet and just getting a Retron 5. Thats the latest system with the best support. If you plan on playing SNES SFCOM you should also try to get the gen2 Retron 5.

I have a gen 1 Retron 5 and it works great with a couple exceptions.

On the Gen 1 pulling and pushing SNES carts is kind of a pita.

Secondly bootlegs and indie carts for SNES are pretty hit and miss due a limitation they never fixed in the rom loading.

To be honest every version of the Hyperkin Retron other than Retron 5 has really spotty reviews. I wouldn't trust any of them.

Taking a retro gaming a little more extreme, if you want the real NES experience you need to spring for an external upscaler. They range from $100-500 for a good one.

Or you can just buy a Retron 5 and be happy with upscaling and filters it provides which, I atleast, have been pretty happy with.

I don't know, I've just read the Retron 1 and 3 have had a lot of support issues, but yeah I love my Retron 5 too. Its the only Hyperkin product I've actually owned. I was too afraid to try the others based on all the forum horror stories.

Right. Based on my experience with the 5 I would give it a shot at$15.

Here is why I never bought a retron 5. It just uses emulation... and they didnt give the authors of the emulators any credit. It takes your cart and dumps the rom, and uses an android based system to run it on an emulator. You may as well just run an emulator on your pc. If I remember correctly the retron 5 uses a cheap rockchip branded processor. If youre going to spend that much on an emulator then you may as well get a shield tv. I just play most of my stuff on original hardware though the prices are getting a little silly on them.

Its a very budget niche thing, I bought mine as I have a large cart based library I could still get that sweet nostalgia pang in my chest from using my carts while still getting all the benefits of an emulator. Additionally you can buy japanese carts and then load the translation patches on the Retron 5. A couple good examples are Front Mission and Treasure of the Rudras which I dont believe ever got a proper translation.

While I dont really care about giving emulator core credit I would agree you are correct all Retron systems do is dump the cart information into a rom file and load it using an emulator thats why if youre after homebrews you may wanna give the retron a pass its support for non-official carts is pretty rough. If you buy a retron youre just buying an emulation box that creates temp roms from carts

If you really wanna play your carts in HD buy a converter like the XRGB-mini FRAMEMEISTER and just play on the original system.

The framemeister xrgb mini is a little pricey for what you get. I installed a hi def nes into my top loader, and I have an order on the way for hd retrovision for first gen genesis. You can load rom hacks on an emulator or an everdrive cartridge. An everdrive cart on original hardware would give the least amount of lag. Actually the hi def nes has less lag than the framemeister. Ive also given thought to the ossc, but Im not too keen on it. Maybe the upcoming framemeister will be better/cheaper especially during resolution changes. Im curious about the old skool classiq 2 hd. I think the sound might be off, but who knows?

Not that I've tried that Retron 1 HD but You guys have to remember that Retron 1 and Retron 1 HD are two different products.

This product came out after the Retron 5. I have the 5 and love it, and I've used Retron 1,2 3 and those were pretty meh but I can't say if the 1 HD is good or not. But at $15 it can't be all that bad.
