Newegg has Synology 4 bay NAS DiskStation DS418play (Diskless), Free shipping, no tax (in IL at least)
Limit 2 per customer
I've been searching for 416play but this one looks much better for a slightly bigger price

I don't see why this is a deal, isn't 429.99 always have been the retail price? B&H have this price every since 418play start to sell.

You can and u can build one for even less than the cost of a NAS. But the power consumption will be a lot higher. But I mean even if it runs 60 watts 24/7 that's still only 60$ a year. Nas will typically run 15W and it's easier with a NAS to set up.

Also, the benefit of Synology as a NAS is both customer service, and their great applications with continuing support and enhancements. They bundle in all of their new features for "free" for all Synology products, including mobile apps and cross-platform sync utilities. There's a reason their products rarely go on sale. I don't own one yet, but supported a few in an enterprise environment and recommend their consumer devices to friends and family who all rave about them.

Can you build something similar in a desktop or server? Yes, but it's going to take you a TON of extra effort and cost more to run and maintain.
