Ring and smart door bell question about hard wiring....

172 14 November 28, 2017 at 03:06 PM
I am considering a smart door bell like ring, but I would rather pay an electrician to hard wire it than go with a battery. The front of the house is hardwired, the back is not and uses battery powered units in the house.

The thing is I don't want to rely on wifi to ring the doorbell. I also don't want to use up a plug and use rings wifi ringer. I would rather install the hard wiring and install a proper doorbell in the house that doesn't need wifi or use up a plug.

In addition to the ring doorbell, can anyone recommend a hard wired door bell that will work with it?

Any regular mechanical door bell should work I should think. The ring unit just replaces the actual external button in that case though I am no expert on the Ring unit. Nothing really sophisticated about a door bell wiring. That said, you might find it expensive to run a wire to the other door depending on your home's layout and whether you need to have a separate ringer or not.

That said, I am not a fan of motion detection door bells with video. They often have crummy motion sensors and either miss the motion entirely or snap on too late to get a picture\video of what you are interested in. If you are going to go through the expense of having an electrician wire it, you probably are better off just getting an external camera put in that records either internally to a home NVR or to some cloud based service. The whole being able to answer the bell via microphone while not at home has very little practical security value imo. If someone sees a video camera, that has a whole lot more value, both practically and as a deterrent. My 2 cents.

I agree with the notices not being s big deal. I'd go for just a Poe camera, but when I look at where to place a camera on the porch, it seems like door bell lis the perfect spot.

You want a spot and angle where people are going to look and you get their face. The only spot for that is over the door or through a door bell.

Putting a camera over the door seems preatty in your face and ugly. I eant to some what conceal or blend them in.

They have dome cameras and the like which are pretty decent and less obtrusive than bullet shaped ones. There are also ones around that are mounted as part of an outdoor lamp or hidden in fixed outdoor porch type lamp.

That said, having it be noticeable is the whole point imo. Better to deter a problem than try to go after the problem after the fact.
