I had the same rattle problems after many years of usage. A quick fix is to unscrew the bottom to open the casing, clean excess dust and apply a silicone based lube. Very easy, 10 minuets tops

I used to be a huge Marpac fan too, but that all changed when I tried a Lectrofan. [amazon.com]
It's a far more versatile machine, with different fan sounds and a volume control that goes to 11!

Anyone who likes the Marpac Dohm should really give the Lectrofan a try, it's unlikely that you will be disappointed.

Amazon has the Marpac Dohm-DS Noise Machine in white on sale as Deal of the Day for $31.49 today on Prime, with free Same Day Shipping. Normally $49.99.

We own 4 of these - one for each bedroom and each of our kids use one. They are great. They emit physical fan white noise without the air blowing. Not an electronic noise machine. Great to throw in your suitcase as well and use while away in hotels.

Amazon has the Marpac Dohm Basic [amazon.com] and the Marpac Dohm-DS [amazon.com] white noise machines as part of its Deal of the Day today. The DS was on sale almost a year ago for $28+, but I haven't seen it this low since then.

I use one every night. If you like white noise when you sleep, this is a must.

I purchased the dual speed last year and it's been a great purchase. I used digital white noise machine before, but I could start to hear the audio looping when I was trying to sleep. This is simply a fan in a small plastic shell and you can change the pitch by twisting the shell to allow more / less air penetration. It's really good at masking noises from other rooms and outside.

For the single-speed basic unit, does anyone know if the fan speed is equivalent to the high or low speed on the the DS model?

Purchased one of these a few years back and used it every night all night. Unfortunately, it developed a rattle a few months after the warranty expired. To Marpac's credit, when I contacted them they provided a prepaid return label, repaired it, and sent it back.

The repaired unit continued to work great for another 12 to 18 months, but it has once again developed the same rattle. I'm not sure if I received a "faulty" unit. It feels like that would be a mistruth when when both times it lasted over a year.

For what it's worth, I've reached out to Marpac once again and asked if they have a repair service. I'll update with their response. If it's cheap enough to repair I'll probably go that route, otherwise I'm considering replacing it with the Lectrofan unit.

Apparently I've had mine since June of 2016. Funny I see this now, as just last night I was messing around with different sound configurations for only the first time since purchase.

It's a great little device, which I use almost every night (and often leave on for days straight). I've gotten rather dependent on it though. If I forget to turn it on before I go to bed, I often have a very hard time falling asleep -- even if there aren't any distracting noises around. Takes me an hour of tossing and turning before I figure out what's missing and turn it on.

Apparently I paid $49.99 for it. I must've been really sleep-deprived and desperate.

genuine question

Is this different / better from playing a white noise audio on your mobile phone?

Nice find. I bought mine 10 + years ago. It developed a rattle after it dropped a few years ago. But we still use it because it works so well. It's a must when the kids are noisy and you want to sleep in. I can't handle the fake noise apps. This is worth the money.

Yeah - it's not 'electronic' noise. It's hard to describe without you experiencing it but it's air flow noise that is (in my opinion) super superior to those electronic noise makers through apps, etc.

I had the same rattle problems after many years of usage. A quick fix is to unscrew the bottom to open the casing, clean excess dust and apply a silicone based lube. Very easy, 10 minuets tops
