I got into it last summer and I smoke about 3 or 4 times a month probably. I love it! There are a bunch of great YouTube channels to get you schooled up in no time. It's also a lot of fun watching dinner guests melt in ecstasy over your food. This is a very reasonable price for a first-timer's rig and should allow you to make some great Q. Get a pair of thick grilling gloves to protect your hands when handling the hot hardware along with a wireless thermometer like the Maverick ET-732 and an instant-read thermometer for spot-checking your food. Hopefully the BBQ bug bites you, too! Good luck!!

Do I need a smoker or do I want a smoker.... Realistically, how often do people use theirs?

I use it quite often - it is easy with electric.
I actually have 2 smokers - 40" digital electric and smaller analog one. I'm using analog all the time.
Analog goes till 400 degrees where all the digital ones heat up max to 275.
Analog produces better results, plus it can be used during the winter as well.

Pretty good deal, just know that the control panel on these aren't weather sealed very well and are known for going bad.

This is the same price at Wal-Mart, btw.

I smoke at least twice a month. It depends on you. In the south it's always bbq season and I'll fire mine up to do pulled pork, smoke a chicken to eat over the course of a week, wings if I feel like wings, etc. Really depends on how much you like smoked food.

I've been looking at this 30in analog one for a first smoker ($114.91), any thoughts?https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0...ref=plSrch

I use mine maybe once a month but my neighbor who got me into this uses his smoker every weekend.

very nice, but I don't regret my Akorn Smoker purchase on clearance at Walmart for $130 earlier this year.
Kamado smokers are the best in my opinion, but these would work too.
