Glad I got in on the $9.99 Best Buy deal. Looks like 39.96 was a pretty good deal.

Yep. They didn't have a limit in the store, so I bought 10 since it didn't look like it would go lower anymore.

Pretty sure it's illegal to add a fee for MasterCard and Visa and against PayPal's terms of service

I was going to bite anyway, but when I did the amount it said they would charge my card was $48. Not the $41 they claimed.

Obligatory "because of price, code is likely from Brazil and hence activating it may be tricky" disclosure.

it is perfectly legal for merchants to add a service charge for using credit cards now. The law changed a few years ago.

i remember it was illegal for a while, I suppose it shouldn't be illegal, but it's in bad form. I am not the customer of the credit card company, the merchant is; they are the ones who should be footing that bill.

so yeah, it's their right to do it, all I can do is avoid places that do

Pretty sure it was only ever illegal in some states, and now the validity of those laws is up in the air, as a federal court ruled it violates merchants' free speech. It's just always been against card issuers' policies, which means merchants who levy surchargers are violating their agreements with the issuers.

While I don't like it, it's pretty dumb for it to be illegal.

as best I can tell, surcharges are regulated federally on debit still, some question on credit (in some states). However, the laws you're referring to are where states allowed it, not the other way around. Either way, it's against the terms of service for the credit card companies https://www.creditcards.com/credi...s-1280.php

It's for the sake of being misleading. It makes perfect sense for it to be. It is outside of common business practice and the average consumer wouldnt reasonably expect to have those charges. Anyone with the time to call PayPal or the credit card companies would result in them wrapping it up for those guys
