The only problem with these are it's almost impossible to plug in two back to back - the plugs are too large...

I have a few of these and they are nice. I want to try out the new Inovelli outdoor double plug though. They are coming out with great stuff.

bettter off using a timer for outdoor lighting etc...loses connectivity if not close.

I guess it depends upon application. My outdoor outlets are attached to my home so they are well within range of one of my other repeater z-wave devices. Using a timer better? Not in my opinion, I have my openHAB control this to turn on outdoor lights at sunset rather than a set time. I had a timer before and It was a pain to always adjust. Also, I can also turn off my outdoor lights earlier than their scheduled time with a voice command to Alexa. I'm not seeing how your argument holds up in situations maybe other than your own.
