Are you serious? The dot is $29 right now. How is it that you are getting the lights for free?

They connect through bluetooth, not WiFi. So make sure your echo is close to the front of your house.

These are indoor lights and not rated for outdoor use.

I think you'd be much better off putting conventional "dumb" lights on a smart plug or outlet and using the Echo Dot to control it. A simple WeMo WiFi plug works for that, or if you have a Z-wave/Zigbee hub (SmartThings, Wink, new Echo, etc.), you can get an actual smart in-wall outlet like the GE ones.

I will say, right now I have a WeMo WiFi plug controlling my Christmas tree lights and it's great not having to get back there.

One thing to keep in mind is that if you're trying to control outdoor lights and go the smart plug route, make sure it's an outdoor plug that you're using (i.e. waterproof, etc.). I have this one [amazon.com] for my patio although I think I paid half as much from a previous slickdeal. Range could be better, but it does the job well enough and is integrated to Alexa via SmartThings.

I just use Alexa and hook enabled switch.
No more plugging/unplugging outdoor lights.

Even I, have my limits on the things I'd want to be controlled by Alexa. Isn't this too much? What's next? An Alexa controlled vibrator? Would you get a discount if you buy that together with an echo dot?

The lights are normally $45, so you're saving $25 by getting the combo with the dot. They seem pretty cool, you can just change the color of all the light bulbs. I just got the Sengled started kit and an extra light bulb. I have no idea what I'm going to do with those since most of our lights are either BR30s or some proprietary florescent light sockets. My wife's going to kill me if I keep ordering these useless smart bulb and things.

Can anyone explain to me why the echo dot can only support 3 strands, while the regular echo supports 4 strands? I thought they were the same except for the speaker?

Isnt the echo plus the only different one because it has that smart hub built in?

Just a note. If you check the Amazon page for just the lights, you'll see you can do more than just turn them on and off with Alexa. The last picture is a short video that shows you can change colors and light pattern via Alexa.
