Yes and no. It's a shame that it ended so soon, but even the showrunner said they kind of ran the course of the story they had to tell.

That and how expensive it was to produce obviously.

One of the best shows ever made!!

If you haven't seen this, do yourself a favor and stop watching overrated and shitty shows now and tune into this.

Thank me once you've at least watched season 1.

They finished the story but rushed it...3~4 seasons in 2...because the costs were too high...and know one single episode of GoT costs more than a whole season of Rome

Interesting I remember them saying they had a five year timeline already laid out they never got a chance to get to.

One of my favorites, was a bit ahead of its time. If it came out now it'd be up there with GoT I believe.

I think it ended right when it should have. Too many shows these days go on for one too many seasons.

Well, there was a 5 year plan, with seasons 3-4 focused on the war in Egypt and season 5 planned to get into the rise of Jesus in palestine, but HBO told them to wrap it up with season 2, so they compressed the egypt story line to conclude it in season 2.

As it turns out, it was probably good they did as much of the set burned down shortly after they wrapped season 2 (it remains the largest outdoor set ever built) so it would have been REALLY costly to rebuild it all over again.

HBO did express some regret about not giving them more seasons, but Bruno Heller said that after they did compress the story down to wrap things up in Season 2, there wouldn't be a need to go further, and while they did talk for years about doing a movie to conclude the series (as they're doing now with Deadwood, though that was cancelled unexpectedly so was left with no conclusion at all), but it never materialized and likely never will at this point.
