amazon has a vivobook i5 8250u 8gb 1tb gor $500. dont know how they compare. but i 'd pref amazon's

I would as well simply because an eighth generation i5 is like a seventh generation i7.

it isn't for this generation, 8th generation has double amount of cores than 7th gen. You can see a lot of performance difference if you're using more than 2 cores.
