How's this one rank against the Netgear nighthawk x6s that was recently on sale at Costco for 149? looks like this one can take a custom firmware

I pay tax at Amazon, too. Depends where you live. Good deal either way. Applause

I have the AC5400 by TP Link. I upgraded from a C9 about a year ago. My neighborhood is full of wifi routers. The slowness wasn't being caused by a weak signal, but rather because of the interference on all the channels from the other routers in my neighborhood. The AC5400 just drowns out all my neighbors signals.

I noticed that when the C9 shared a channel with Apple routers, the interference was the worst, and the speeds would be severely diminished. I don't know about this router, but the AC5400 is a greedy router that works well in a neighborhood with a lot of other routers.

I'm on my 4th TP Link router. They're reliable. I haven't rebooted my AC5400 in months. But if I were to upgrade my network today, I would get the Orbi AC3000 kit. TP Link has a mesh kit, but speeds aren't as great as the Orbi. Orbi also has a very strong wifi radio which is very useful in a neighborhood with a lot of routers.

I have the Archer 5400 and I'm not sure if my router is defective, but sometimes when I do speedtests, I get like 5 mbps down and then 10 min later i'll do another speedtest, and I get 300 mbps down. I don't know why there is so much variation. A lot of time websites don't even load, and other times it's blazing fast. This problem only happens on WiFi tho and not ethernet. Is my router defective?

That sounds like the same problem I was having with my C9 that was remedied by the AC5400. Download a wifi analyzer on your phone and you'll be able to see all the channels being used by all the networks in your neighborhood. If you're neighbors have powerful routers, they could be flooding the channels being used by your router. Your router should be smart enough to switch channels, but then your neighbors channels will also switch and it's just a constant back and forth of slow and fast.

Lucky for me, the AC5400 seems to be working, but if it becomes a problem, I'm going to set up a bunch of Orbis at each corner of my house.
