What's a good weight for a beginner? Not sure I could handle 14 lbs.

If you're tossing it to the wall or ground, or ab Work, then I'd start with a 5. If you're doing squats then start with 10. 14 is a bit advanced.

Edit: what you can also do is get a free day pass at a local gym that has medicine balls and experiment with them to see what weight is best for you.

I wonder if this one is good for slams. Some of them crack when slammed.

Reading the reviews I'm seeing that some broke in half after slamming... others said it bounces too high. I have the 12lb currently but I don't use it for slam exercises.
