Most of all the knives that are under $20 are made in China. The more expensive ones are made in the USA... There is a difference in quality. js

Still waiting for the Ken Onion Leek to go on sale. That is a U.S. made knife.

Check out "Knife Steel Composition" app in the play store. It will answer most of your questions about what is a decent steel. I use it alot.

Good is subjective...appropriate for what application? 4cr steel is on the low end of the Chinese metal spectrum. There are many blogs comparing metal grades from around the world or search for metal conversion tables is where I would start. They all have pro and cons. Some best seller Kershaws from the past made from China are double this grade.

It's all about the speed safe...most of these cheaper knives lack the quality and ease to open and close with one hand, even if labeled as having it.
