If you are a true beginner at guitar but are loaded, definitely pay up for something nicer like for example a Martin. The reason I bring this up: Acoustic guitars are harder to play compared to an electric guitar. And cheaper acoustic guitars are harder to play than nicer ones.

The necks are bit faster on better quality guitars, and the action is such that it requires less effort to fret the guitar. One could then conclude that having a nice guitar is most important when you are a beginner, as compared to when you advance as a player. As a test, go to a guitar shop and try to fret an F# on each guitar. A lot of beginners struggling with barre chords will not even be able to physically do it on the very cheap guitars.

With that said, if you're on a budget, this is a really good deal. And in this price range, Yamaha is the best.

I gotta disagree with that...I look at craigslist every day and 99% of the sellers are so greedy they will discount their used instruments by 10-20%, if that much. The best deals on guitars are retail specials or fire sales that can discount some models up to 50%. Plus you get a warranty.

That said, I don't know if this is a good price because the OP didn't provide any information about the regular price for this instrument.

....but yes, this guitar new at sam ash and guitar center is $400, so this is a good deal.

See, most craigslisters would put this on CL as "excellent condition" for $350 You're better off buying new.

This guitar would be suitable for beginners. Honestly, the best deals on guitars come from the used market. Facebook, Craigslist, etc...

I think pretty much all Yamaha guitars are well made, even on the low end.

I bought one around 2013 but with Laminated top to learn for about $90, absolutely no regrets on the purchase.

I don't think you're going to find a solid top (non-laminated) for less than $100 unless you go used route.
If you want one for a beginner, I can't think of a guitar brand I trust more.

Yes! Very good buy. I have a very similar one, and I'm very happy with it. I've been playing casually for 10+ years

Agreed. But if you are a beginner and do not know a good deal from a bad one, this is a very solid option.

This is not a bad deal. But after comparing an FG700 and a FG800, I preferred the newer 800 for overall sound. The secret is (probably) in the scalloped bracing. The regular price of the FG800 is $200. The difference wasn't huge though, and it shouldn't matter at all to a beginner.

You are getting neck and headstock binding on the FG740, and different woods on the laminated back and sides (which make very little difference). Resale value *may* be better for this higher appointed guitar.
