I would say no. Jimx200 is absolutely correct in his assessment of the new 18-55mm VR AF-P kit lens. Its autofocus speed is much faster than the older version of this lens that comes with the d3300. Also, the d3400 offers bluetooth connection for the Nikon SnapBridge software for transferring files to mobile devices. (And I've read that SnapBridge was recently updated.)

But the d3300 surprisingly offers a few advantages to its newer sibling: (1) It has a microphone input for superior audio quality for HD video recording; (2) Its pop up flash is more powerful.

These minor differences aside, you pretty much have the exact same camera: same sensor, same image processor, same frames per second burst capability, etc.

Very good deal for a rock solid dslr. This is all one needs for family, vacation, hiking, etc. use as it's sensor is excellent. This new kits lens is a definite step up from the previous version too. No downside.

Yes, this is the deal to get if you're in the market for a dSLR camera. And from a Nikon authorized seller as well.

Thanks for detailed comparison! I'll probably be staying put with the D3300 for now.

Can somebody recommend a small bag to go with this? Enough to hold just the items in this deal- body w/ kit lens, attached or not.

One interesting bit of cost reduction I worry about:

There are a few differences between the D3300 and D3400 worth pointing out. Unlike its predecessor, the Nikon D3400 does not include a built-in ultrasonic sensor cleaning system, however it still supports Nikon's Image Dust Off Reference Photo feature for software removal of dust spots, and mirror lock-up is still provided for manual sensor cleaning. The Nikon D3300's external stereo microphone jack and accessory terminal have been removed as well.

So is dropping the ultrasonic sensor cleaning system going to cause problems for owners, if so how big of a problem?

Would this be a good entry DSLR (gift) for someone coming from simple point and shoot (elph) camera but wanting a bit more?
