OOS as of 08 Dec 2017.

There's a sale on the WD40PURZ model (New model, old is WD40PURX). Use the code 1205GBTES26 for the deal. These HDDs are intended for surveillance capture integrity and lifespan.

I'm not entirely sure how much the coupon is for since I bought 2 yesterday for $230 (no tax in my state) with the code. If someone could comment on what the deal is for 1 I'll gladly update the OP if it's not $115 (it might be $10 off any amount - I'm not sure).

It's $5 off per drive with this code.

I've been watching these for a while and they seem to have hit a floor at $120. I needed 2 and any amount off from the $120 is a great deal as far as I can tell. CamelCamelCamel has them at a floor of $119.12.

The WD Purple is advertised as a 5400 RPM Surveillance Hard Drive. By comparison, I bought a WD 4TB External (full size) HD for $69 a couple months ago from Best Buy.

Yep! These are specifically designed for the rigor associated with continuous video capture (lots of writing). These drives are tried, true, and tested for that purpose. You could use any drive for surveillance capture, but these drives are designed for a longer lifecycle.

You might have wanted to include the word "Surveillance" in both the title and first post of this thread for those not familiar with WD Purple drives.

For me, if I add one HD to the cart, it is $5 off. Two HD is $10 off.

I've read some folks use these in their Tivos.
Anyone know how well they stand up for that?

I use a couple of these in my FreeNAS setup in lieu of Reds. They work great for that purpose, and there's no perceptible speed difference versus Reds. I'm almost certain they're identical hardware with some minor firmware differences. The Purples support TLER just like the Reds, and in fact this website shows they're pretty similar to Reds at a lower cost:

I wish I saw that offer. Still, $5 off the standard $120 isn't bad and no tax/shipping at Newegg (for me) makes the deal.

This site has a pretty good comparison table "WD Red vs. Blue vs. Black vs. Purple Comparison & Differences"

https://www.gamersnexus.net/guide...ed-in-2017

These drives are designed specifically for surveillance system storage. That's not to say you couldn't use them for something else, but that's where they shine.
