Inclined to agree. Mine must be around 1/2HP as well and the only time in a decade it didn't do what I needed was when I stuffed it to the hilt with carrot peels before turning it on. It couldn't get started.

I guess with 1 HP you could throw all kinds of stuff in it, though; bones, bolts, glasses, whatever laugh out loud

I googled "Do I need a 1 hp garbage disposal" and this came back with the stupidest logic ever.

That's like saying if I have an 8 person household I need a larger TV than if I have a 4 person. Who came up with that?

Missed the last FP deal. In for one.

EDIT: RE: 1/2 HP vs 1HP. We currently have the 1HP model and I am getting this for my in-laws for a house they are renovating. We put it through the ropes. It has been through multiple full chicken carcasses, egg shells, vegetable peels, and even a few plastic spoons (thanks kiddos). It never slows down and always clears out quickly after 2 years of heavy use. I can't say that the 1/2 horse won't do just the same but it seems the only downside to going with the more powerful motor is the fact that it will be louder. Considering the lifetime warranty on something that is supposed to last a very long time, the extra 30 bucks for the 1HP model seems like a pretty decent value.

Great price, paid 98 for mine and thought that was a good deal.
Just a heads up, this thing doesn't have an allen key slot underneath like typical sink a rators do in the event of a jam, the instructions say to use the back end of a broom stick in the event of a sieze. I thought this was gonna suck but I haven't had a jam in the year I've had it, and we run all kinds of crap through it. This is a good price for this thing and it works well

If you live in a 1-2 person household, a 1/3 or ½ HP model would suffice.
If you live in a 3-6 person household, your garbage disposer should have a ½ to ¾ HP engine.
For a 5-8 person household, the minimum HP your disposer should have is ¾, but a 1 HP motor is preferable.
For anything households that have over 8 members, a 1 to 2 HP model will be needed.
That's like saying if I have an 8 person household I need a larger TV than if I have a 4 person. Who came up with that?

The reason you buy the 1 HP Waste King model is because it has a lifetime warranty. The 1/2 HP has a 2 or 5 year warranty and the 3/4 has an 8 to 10 year warranty. If you're going to stay at your house for a long time, go big or stay home.

I just bought from Amazon for $100, and that's why I went with the 1HP.

good point, i was unaware of that.
luckily, we do not plan to stay at this house for more than 5 years.

also, these are super easy to install, assuming you can get the old fker off (that was a huge pain in my case)

I bought this about a year ago. A big chunk of metal flew out of it,, grinder part. They replaced it and even had a plummer do it for free. Then about a month later they recalled it, because of reports of parts breaking out of it (which is what happened to mine). They again sent a new unit and again had it removed and installed for free. Excellent service. Highly recommend the 1 hp unit. Just the wife and I. Never have had a lockup on it like my older 1/3 hp unit. Again, fantastic service. Also, easy to install.
