What classes are easier with a Mac? Many are Chromebook now. The thought that Mac is better for X or Y is mostly an old school thought now days or actually the reverse. Apple has drove away most of the high end video editing market. Graphics is very much equal. I would imaging many publishing type jobs or schools are still is mac based because thats what they have historically used even though there is no technical advantage anymore.

When does she start school and actually need the machine? If you are buying several months early to give as a Christmas gift I would instead encourage your to give the gift of money to put to a machine closer to needing it and wait for now. Wait for deals or until you actually get requirements from the school/class. As far as upgrades, who knows but traditionally you don't see upgrades this time of the year. Summer and Fall tend to be the new releases. Here are some rumors chances are she won't need any of this https://www.macworld.co.uk/news/m...s-3661715/

The Air is the lighter weight, less powerful machine.
Macbook non pro - Is the middle model its a bit larger, a bit better spec, kind of like an Air Pro
The Pro is the higher end model, if editing media was a thing she was doing this would be the best machine for it.

I would never get the air. It hasn't really been updated since 2015 and is using a 2-3 generation older processor along with a much lower resolution screen. The MacBook is smaller and lighter and the MacBook pro is more powerful and around the same size. Spend the extra money if you have to go with a Mac.
