I liked this as a child for some reason, but reading it to my own kids I realized it's just a depressing, abusive, co-dependent relationship. Seriously. There is nothing 'good' in this story.

No need. You can see all bad from it. That's perfectly ok. But then you can use it as a teaching moment. A story that you should learn from.
