There are two $100 prepaid phones that are free after rebate if you're up to drop that much cash. I'm not sure what these will be good for but it's here if interested.

LG Tribute HD Virgin Mobile [newegg.com] - $100 Virgin Mobile Rebate [newegg.com]
Samsung Galaxy J3 Emerge Boost Mobile [newegg.com] - $100 Boost Mobile Rebate [newegg.com]

I bought the Boost Mobile version of this for $20 (with no activation/service requirement) at Best Buy over BF weekend 2016. For that price, it's a decent semi-disposable ereader/"mini-tablet". But everything else aside (like overall build quality that's really pretty sad), the battery life is terrible, even when I remember to turn wifi off unless I'm actively using it. Using it as an actual phone, i think you'd be lucky to get a full day's use out of it, even being careful. Using it mainly as an ereader/timer/wifi-based "notifier" while keeping the cellular radio in airplane mode all the time and turning off wifi much of the time, I generally get about one day's use out if it myself. Listening to music with wired earphones doesn't drain the battery too badly, but using Bluetooth as well, or watching video, burns through the battery like nobody's business.

Also fwiw, the Boost Mobile version isn't (even network) unlockable; I have no idea if the VM version is, or isn't. It's true that there haven't been any really good prepaid phone deals lately so I guess YMMV, and fwiw, the display is pretty nice. But I'd seriously hesitate to risk a huge rebate and deal with a service requirement for this thing.

Virgin mobile plan is only $35/month unlimited and the phone is free with rebate... Am I missing something? Are there cheaper prepaid providers?

Last Black Friday, LG Tribute HD was on sale for 20$ with free shipping

This is not a good deal considering need to wait for 100$ back via rebate and need to pay 70$+ Tax for service on Virgin. At-least total 170$ out of pocket before your rebate will be processed

Virgin is MNVO of Sprint (it's complicated more than that) and Virgin doesn't give Hotspot for free. Sprint still is running free year offer with number port in (I have iPhone already and ported number to Sprint and I give only 3~4$/Month for unlimited talk/minutes/data and 10 GB Hotspot per month)

The other thing being, as I wrote earlier, the phone isn't a very good phone. I bought one last year, and while I can't speak to call quality or reception, the build quality is very cheap (I haven't actually tried to "bend" it obviously, but it feels much more "bendable" than the Phoenix 2 I paid $30 at the same time that I bought the Tribute HD over last year's BF weekend. And while the Phoenix 2 was sold for ATT's network, it was network-unlockable without a service requirement, to boot.) The Tribute HD was worth buying just to use as a music player/ereader/mini-tablet for $20, but I'd hate for it to be my primary "phone".

And to repeat my earlier comment, worst of all, the battery life is really awful. By comparison, much worse than the Phoenix 2's. I doubt you'd get even a full day out of this model using it "as a phone" and as "an Android device". As an Android device alone, I get just about one day's use out if it if I don't watch any video, but even without cellular service being active, watching video does burn through the battery in no time at all. In short, even if you have to pay more/something for a phone, if you're going to use it "as a phone" for any period of time, you'd be better off doing that... And if you just want a prepaid phone to use as a "mini-tablet", the 2 month service requirement totally kills the deal, even ignoring having to wait for the rebate, assuming it goes through without hassles...

The $100 rebate form for this phone states - "Offer only available for device purchases through Mobile Now...". What is Mobile Now?

I am wondering this as well. Will the rebate be approved ordering from Newegg?
