I am surprised this wasn't posted already. You can get a TerraMaster USB RAID-5 drive enclosure for $160 at Newegg - a savings of $140 off the MSRP and $90 off the "normal" price on Amazon.

Numerous reviews on this thing on YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1...n3I&t=297s

I decided to go with this in place of the Sans Digital enclosures I have used in the past. It will work great with the 8TB Red drives I got from the Easyshare deals

Stay away from it if you plan on accessing the individual drives instead of drives setup as a RAID array. It does not support JBOD.

What would you recommend as an alternative?

Review says it doesn't support UASP, so no low-level access to the drives.

Amazon showing a different model D5-300C says: Unique 2+3 RAID: hard drive #1 & #2 can be configured as RAID 0, RAID 1 or Single disk. The remaining drives #3-5 work as single, independent drives. The OP model is listed as RAID 5 only.

But, I don't know what is different on the inside. That said, TerraMaster products have all but gone on Amazon over the past few days: https://smile.amazon.com/s/ref=nb...erramaster

I am not talking just about out of stock, due to the blowout sale, but the listings are gone.

No uasp and no jbod.... So basically your stuck with 20 MB/s. Wow. This is terrible. You could probably spend a bit more and get a bare bones intel pc with better hardware and 6-drive raid.

That usually indicates reviews so bad, that they're going to relist later as a new item to circumvent all the previous reviews.

For those who want JBOD or to use software RAID, you can get a Mediasonic 4-bay box that supports both USB and ESATA for $99. They were $75 recently, so watch for sales:

I highly recommend picking up an Addonics ESATA controller to go with them (you can hook 2 to each card) as the ESATA seems to work much better than USB. Out of stock currently:

Great point. Also, if you want to do JBOD, you can just use an old PC or something, even more flexible. Smilie

what software would you use with this to back up a home desktop to this NAS? Does it have its own software?

I have two of these usb raid enclosures last it was at this price. I value its fan cooling and 5 bay array for what is worth. Worked flawlessly so far. Served as a giant usb drive

Ive been looking at the Akitio Thunder 3 Quad X to use with a Mac setup. It seems like the best, relatively cheap thunderbolt 3 option. Would anyone advise against it? I figure that in a raid 5 with softraid and then backup to separate bare drives.

I have a Terramaster D2-310 running USB C 3.1 over 2x8TB drives that were shucked during the BF Easystore sale.

Working great, super quiet and in Raid 1.
