What are the options for listening to music on Alexa without having Prime?

8,209 2,214 December 7, 2017 at 06:35 PM
I gave an Echo Dot to a 11 year old for her birthday. They don't have Prime and say they can't request music.

What are her options. Will she be able to request a song and it play without Prime? I believe she can set up a free Iheart radio or Pandora acct. and request an artist but could she request a song by title using any other option for free?

Thanks.

Thanks so much for the reply. I don't know why I thought even without Prime, people could request songs but it was limited. I ended up chatting with Amazon last night and they said I could add her DOT to my Alexa account so I'll go over to her house and register it for her so she can request songs and enable skills, etc.

Evidently I can add up to 10 devices. I always thought only one could stream at a time but they claim, you can play up to 10 at the same time. Will give that a try.

I'm not aware of any free service that lets you request a certain song. The free Pandora/Spotify would work but only for choosing a station.

FYI. If you add the Dot to your Amazon account be sure to add a passcode for purchases otherwise they would be able to order from Amazon using your account. Also, be aware they may be able to access some of your account information such as package delivery dates etc. Not ideal... since you don't know what else Amazon will add in the future.

A better solution would be to share your prime account benefits with another account and add the Dot to that account.

You can't do that anymore (share prime account). At least not like you used to. It has to be a household membership sharing everything including purchase information. Any accounts shared (I have 3) are grandfathered but you cannot edit, remove or add any new ones. That entire section is gone.

Oh right.. forgot about that. In that case OP I wouldn't recommend adding the Dot to your account unless you're comfortable with the information anyone in that household can access.

You can upload a bunch of your own music wavs to Amazon without a Prime account. They allow you a fair amount of free space. You can create playlists and request them via Alexa. No it is not on demand anything you want, but neither is it costing you $100 a year. I have dozens of CDs ripped and stored there.

Thanks everyone. I ended up not adding her to my acct. I just signed up for 3 months of Spotify for .99 and told them my user name and password. After March 8, we'll worry about it then. lol ...but I got her as far as March 8th for the time being

Even if I added her to my acct, you can only stream one device at a time and I already have myself and another person on my account so I didn't want us fighting for our turn to stream.

It seems like they would allow more than one on your Prime acct to stream and listen to their own music.
