I've heard conflicting info on how long they last. My NAS unfortunately only accepts 2.5" and running 1TB WD Reds isn't very efficient. Thinking of putting a couple of these in to increase storage.

"Conflicting info" because it depends on who you talk to. I've personally shucked about a dozen of these over time, and yes, have had an early death or two, but by and large, they mostly work.

Keep in mind they are 15mm drives, so your NAS would need to be able to take the taller drives.

Whoa, the failure and overheating reports in the Newegg reviews are frightening. :-(

And on Amazon, out of over 13,000 reviews, 81% give it 4 or 5 starts (70% give it 5 stars).

Are these reliable as back up for a computer to store movies and such —— not daily use —— every time an external hard drive is offered with a good price SeaGate or Western Digital people always say they are terrible ... are there any good ones???

You mean perfect drives that don't fail? No, they don't exist. While the reviewers on Newegg aren't happy, the reviewers on Amazon like the drive.

Use a CC that offers extra warranty protection and you're good for 2-3 years. Smilie

What are your thoughts on using them in an always on NAS? Am I asking for trouble?

I have two experiences with "always on"...one has been flawless with two of these mirrored, and zero issues. The other experience had an early failure, but the replacement has been flawless since.

It seems if you can get through a month, you're good. Smilie
