Hmm, this or Costco bundle for hero 5? Is the session a big downgrade?

The full size gopro is a more capable camera. There are video modes that are not available on the session and if I remember correctly it also has higher bitrate so video quality is better.

IMO if you need the small size / weight of the session then it is the right choice (for example for a flight camera it is much better than the hero).
If you don't need the small size it is worth it to go with the hero for the added functions and better quality. It is also more convenient with the screen and replaceable battery.

Perfect, you confirmed my thoughts on the differences. I placed an order for the costo hero 5 bundle. This deal had me second guessing for a bit, but not anymore. IMO, a replaceable battery alone is worth its weight in gold.

still a sweet deal on this though. Just the Hero suits my tastes better.

Aren't these normally way more expensive? What's the catch?

Own both, the Hero 5 is a better device in every respect. Which do I use more? Not even close, the Session. Just so small and convenient. Don't even notice it mounted to my motorcycle helmet, toss it in the pocket for a day at the beach. Just yesterday mounted it under the fender to check out my suspension/noise when driving.

Also a big difference with Session and normal GoPro is the Session battery is built-in and can't be replaced. This is kind of a problem if you're in the field and run out of battery charge, you can't just swap in a charged up battery and keep going.

Not as convenient but could you use a battery pack to keep it going?

I'm still using a hero 3+ black. Would this be much of an upgrade? If at all?

Yes but I think the battery pack adds about the size of the camera. It's $35 on Amazon. I lost my GoPro Hero 5 cycling. I probably should have just went with the Hero Session 5 to began with for the size but wanted the option to swap batteries. If I pull the trigger on Hero Session I would like to put on my visor of my helmet if possible. If anyone has a suggestion of a cheaper action camera for cycling let me know. I don't need great quality.

same here this is far more convinient to use as helmet mount. when mounted you cant use screen or swap batteries anyway and is pretty heavy to ignore something is mounted on your helmet vs this. Yes buit in battery but i am guessing this will still last you a few years and you would want to upgrade to something else in 3-5 years. only thing the price difference of $100 is too low for the features you are getting with the black so hard to make a decision. but heres my take, buy a camera that is easy to use vs features. you use your mobile camera more than a dslr why? convinience same goes here.
