Had this a while back. It's a good little filter.

Even though it's rated at 100 gallons, don't expect it to be to effective on most 100 gallon tanks.

Got one used in an aquarium deal, it has been running strong for 8 years since with only having to replace one inner seal due to dry rot. Only place that sells the replacement pads locally is Petco though. Plan to get one as a back up even though I won't put it on anything bigger then a 55 gallon.

Anyone know how this compares to the (API Branded) Rena XP L (previously known as XP 3)?

Sounds good! This is my first canister filter. And when I saw the deal i know i need to get it. I'm already impressed how it turned my tank over in less than 24 hrs. I have a mbuna tank and those guys sh*ts A LOT! I'm using it on a 37 gallon tank. But now.. I'm in a market for a bigger tank! Lol

Yeah, it was my first Canister as well & was shocked how more effective it was than my HOB filters. I had Mbuna plus other Africans in my tank as well... and yes - they are some messy fish Smilie

I had a 75 Gallon and was using this in conjunction with a couple HOB's... when my tank got over-packed due to serious fish reproduction Smilie I got rid of the HOB and was using this in conjunction with the Fluval FX5 (a beast).

I sold off all my gear when I moved Frown

I have both this and the 2 of the API XP FILSTAR XL, over all I like the API more. The API is easier to use and clean and does not need to be primed after being cleaned. When you With the Penn Plax, to clean, you have to close the 2 valves on the tubes and detach them, which still cause the remaining water to spill out,the API does not have this issue, however, the API is more expensive as well.

Never had a canister. Been using HOB and hate replacing filters every couple of weeks. Would the canister just require cleaning it's media or is there also a $2 filter that needs to be swapped every cleaning?

You can clean most filter media, even hob ones. Of course the instructions tell you to buy a replacement f media every few weeks... The guys who wrote the instructions sell the replacement parts.

How does this compare to the SunSun HW304B? I have 4 of those running, and those are only 68 bucks on Amazon right now as well.

I honestly don't know how they compare as I don't have the Pennplax, however the Rena XP3's I have a pair of that have been going since 2006. They are great filters, if they were in the same price range personally I'd get the Rena.
