How does S30V steel compare to 14C28N in the "Black Blur"? I ask because I got one about 2 yrs ago for just under $35...

I can attest that the S30v steel is REALLY nice. I'm no knife expert my any imagination, but I do own this knife and also a black tanto blur and I prefer this one, hands down.

I have the 14C28N Blur and it was fantastic as my first knife. Cuts well, easy to take an edge, doesn't rust easily. That said, I like S30V steel much better. It is still easy to sharpen, but it holds an edge much longer. You can also buy/make a strop and compound, and get an even longer useful life out of the edge before you have to sharpen it.

S30V is a big step up from the Chinese steel 14C28N.

I've got multiple knives in both, the high vanadium alloys just stay sharp longer for me. The cheaper steels are the ones I leave in places like the garage where I don't care if they get lost.

Honest question - please offer advice:

What makes this knife worth $60 when there are other Kershaws (that look similar to the untrained eye) on SD for $14?

The steel they use is vastly different

Would this be an overkill for opening up mail?

Basically two things: build quality and steel quality. This knife is made in USA, so it's action will be better, manufacturing quality controls are better, etc. As for the steel, it will keep an edge much longer which may be a big deal unless you have a nice tool and the skill to sharpen your own knives.

Overall, this knife will last much longer than those other cheapies.

For what it's worth though, the scales on this sucker are really a nuisance if you carry it by the clip (I have a cheaper steel version someone gave me). It's pretty coarse and tends to "stick" every time you pull it out. Also, no deep carry clip makes me shy away a bit. Still a fantastic price for really really nice steel.

The S30V for $60 is impressive... I have some S30V benchmades I paid over $100 for and they are my favorite knives. I bought tons of cheap knives too, but their steel is garbage compared to S30V.

Honest question, How does this one compare to this earlier Deal, better steel I'm assuming? Dropped the ball and missed the earlier deal. Thanks in advance.

Not too bad. Cheapest on Amazon (via CCC) has been $53.50. S30V steel is the bomb and the Blur is one of the best (if not the best) folders that Kershaw makes. Not to mention, lifetime warranty and free sharpening. Nice find OP!

That knife uses Sandvik 14C28N steel which is inferior to the steel used with this version of the Blur (S30v).
