The newest roku stick is only $27 on Walmart. Also looks like they're offering $80 worth of free content.

I got this through the crazy refurb deal they had, nice unit, a little laggy but so much better than my Fire stick experience. The remote is high quality and the unit responds well to it.

Certainly not a bad deal for someone if they need a roku.

Looks like you have to both activate a new roku and sign up for an auto renewing $80 plan in order to get the free month. So you cant resell the "codes".

if that is the case, then I would beg to differ. The fire stick is a better direction to go IF you're looking to add aforementioned "free content" apps.

I was able to add an OTG USB hub that I purchased for around $8 from eBay. That gave me three USB ports and several storage slots now added to the fire stick. I also purchased a mini LED keyboard for another 8 bucks so I could control the non Fire TV apps.

Anyway, if anybody knows weather any kind of Android apps can be installed on this device please chime in.

USB otg wasn't added until Fire Stick 2.

Yes you can install some Android apps on Fire Stick. I have on mine the NFL Network app, and Screen rotator installed on mine. Same sideload procedure as kodi. Check https://forum.xda-developers.com/...?t=2756608

Is this an upgrade from my old Roku HD that I purchased in 2014?

Does anyone know if this will work if you try to stream directly from your phone without a local wifi network? If not, do any of the major players out there allow it (Fire/Chromecast)? Mother in law is a light internet user, so she just tethers to her phone for her PC, but I think she'd really like a way to cast youtube/netflix to a TV.

I got the newest revision of fire stick that was backordered from black Friday unopened still. Should I return it and get this especially due to the lack of YouTube January 1st?

Can you watch YouTube on this? Since YouTube is being removed from fire TV we're looking for an alternative. Thanks

Google and Amazon still have 2 weeks to work out the YouTube thing... Hope they can come up with some solution for consumers...
