I wish UHD versions qualified for this, even if there was an upcharge.

This is where itunes and an AppleTV actually helps. Who would have thought Apple would be leading the way to make 4k digital cheap and easy

Except they don't support any other providers and currently do not support ATMOS.

Atmos is an issue but I think that only matters to a very small subset of people (myself included). How many people actually have a receiver that supports atmos and height channels to take advantage of it? I'd guess less than 1% of people with 4k tvs but I honestly don't know. I'm waiting for the ATV4k atmos update eagerly though.

And as far as support? It supports its own ecosystem just like the others do and most movies export now via movie's anywhere or UV. Deals like this just seem like a better value when I can buy 2 movies for 9.99 and get the 4k version on itunes for free. Is it perfect? no. But until Vudu, Fandango, and Amazon follow suit its one of the least expensive ways to consume 4k digital copies.

Most people (greater than 50%) that have high end 4K tv's (e.g. OLED, QLED, etc) have surround sound with receivers supporting ATMOS (myself included).

Thanks sir good deal. I could care less about the minute details I'm missing without 4K UHD bull. I keep digital movies on my phone for traveling. I got better things to do with my life than upgrade my tv every 3 months, sit like a fat sack of ass, and complain about things lacking detail.

Maybe I'm missing what you are assuming there but buying these on VUDU in HDX does not get you a free 4K upgrade on iTunes. It only appears like you get that, but unless you pause and check the actual quality when streaming via the Apple TV 4K Player it's hard for most people to know since iTunes makes it appear to many that they have the 4K/UHD in their library when they don't.

Apple clarified and I don't have the link handy but you can google for it, that ONLY HD purchases made on iTunes =OR= HD codes redeemed on iTunes qualify for the "free" phantom upgrade to 4K/UHD.
I call it phantom because you still just own the HD copy (and it is recorded in your iTunes library as HD) but IF you have the Apple TV 4K player then for those two types of purchases/redeems if the movie has a 4K version on iTunes then you get to stream it.

But ports over from other services do not qualify for the 4K/UHD "free" phantom upgrade. There are some lucky people that have glitches that allow this but it is not supposed to be that way.

EDIT: heres a link to the Reddit talking about it and they have the actual press release link in there

Um, id disagree. Alot of people just plugged in their old receivers. And alot of sound systems dont even support atmos and most people dont even know.
