laptop docking station recommendations?

493 54 December 12, 2017 at 11:37 AM
Hi all, I have an employee that is asking for a laptop with a docking station. She doesn't need anything special (quad core i5, 8 gb ram is the standard for our desktops) but is highly mobile and we need two docking stations.

I have never purchased one before nor used one. Any suggestions on how to think this purchase through and what our needs are?

We have had real good luck with both dynadocks and Startech docks.

Neither delivers power, so you will need a couple of extra power cords, but other than that, one USB cable is all you plug in.

You can look at OEM docking stations...Dell and HP have their business class laptops that have the docking port and it's click in, click out as needed.

The netbooks from most will have to be a USB version most likely... USB3 would be the better choice as all the video, network, keyboard and mouse traffic would be going across the single USB3 port.

If you have USB 3.0 something like this would be nice

But I would say you are better off getting a business class notebook from Dell or HP. Dell outlet would be my first choice.

would a laptop like this work with one of well known universal docking stations on the market?

is all that is needed to connect to not just the peripherals but also to supply power to the laptop is to plug an usb 3.1 cord from the docking station to the laptop.?

Yes. All the peripherals (mouse, network, keyboard, multiple monitors, speakers, extra USB devices) will plug into the docking station.

You will only need to plug two cables into the laptop, a USB cable from the dock and power.

Is there such a thing as an universal docking station the also provides the power?

Yes, if the laptop supports usb-c/thunderbolt 3 charging.

With the advent of USB-C it is possible, but currently still expensive... And I don't think that Dell will do it.

Cheaper to buy an extra power supply. (You can always cable sleeve it to the USB cable for neatness.)
